Software Engineer Salary Is Not a One-Number Market
Two Software Engineers with similar experience can receive
very different offers in India. The difference may come from their skills,
responsibilities, employer, location, industry or the current demand for their
expertise.
Years of experience provide a useful starting point, but relevant
experience and demonstrated impact often matter more than the number of
years alone.
1. Experience and Seniority
A Software Engineer working on defined development tasks may
have a different market position from an engineer who designs systems, owns
production services, handles complex technical problems or mentors other
engineers.
As engineers move into senior, lead, staff and principal
roles, scope, ownership and technical impact can become increasingly important.
2. Technology and Specialised Skills
Demand for technology skills changes continuously. Cloud,
AI/ML, data engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, platform engineering,
distributed systems and other specialised areas can attract stronger demand
when qualified talent is scarce.
However, simply listing a popular technology does not
automatically increase salary. Depth of expertise and the ability to apply
that expertise to real business problems matter.
3. Product vs Service Companies
Product companies, SaaS businesses, IT services firms and
consulting organisations operate under different business models and may have
different compensation structures.
This does not mean product companies always pay more.
A specialised services company may pay exceptionally well
for a scarce skill, while a product company may have a lower range for another
role. The importance of the role to the employer's business is often more
relevant than the product-versus-service label.
4. MNCs, GCCs and Indian Companies
MNCs, Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and Indian companies
may follow different salary bands, job grades, benefits and compensation
philosophies.
A large MNC may offer a structured compensation package,
while a high-growth Indian technology company may provide greater flexibility
for critical talent.
Neither should automatically be assumed to pay more.
5. Startup Funding and Stage
Bootstrapped and funded startups can have very different
approaches to compensation.
Early-stage companies may balance salary with ESOPs or other
incentives, while later-stage companies may have greater hiring budgets.
However, funding alone does not determine salary. A
profitable bootstrapped company can offer excellent compensation, while a
funded startup may maintain strict salary controls.
6. Location and Remote Work
Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi NCR
have major technology markets, but compensation can vary across locations based
on employer concentration, talent availability and hiring demand.
Remote work has also changed traditional location-based
compensation. Some companies use location-specific salary bands, while others
compete nationally for talent.
7. Role Scope and Business Impact
Job titles are not standardised. Two people with the title
"Senior Software Engineer" may have very different responsibilities.
Architecture, system ownership, production responsibility,
technical leadership, mentoring and cross-team influence can all affect
compensation.
8. Total Compensation
Candidates should look beyond fixed salary.
A compensation package may include fixed pay, variable pay,
bonuses, ESOPs, employer contributions, insurance and other benefits. A higher
headline package is not necessarily better if a significant portion is
variable, deferred or equity-based.
The CoHire Perspective
There is no single "correct" salary for a Software
Engineer in India.
A useful benchmark considers:
Experience + Skills + Role Scope + Employer + Business
Model + Company Stage + Location + Market Demand + Total Compensation
